BIENNALE DANZA 2018: BREATH, STRATEGY AND SUBVERSION

The 12th International Festival of Contemporary Dance, titled BREATH, STRATEGY AND SUBVERSION and directed by Marie Chouinard, kicks off on Friday 22 June. The program continues until Sunday 1 July and includes 19 shows (5 world premieres, one European premiere and 5 Italian premieres), encounters with the choreographers, film screenings, and the activities of the Biennale College Danza.

President Paolo Baratta explains: “The Dance festival chooses to highlight works and practices that are not associated with predetermined languages but are constantly regenerated. Marie Chouinard likes artists who are not content with composing aesthetically-gratifying results but understand the stage as a place of permanent venture and discovery where language is renewed through its involvement in the creative process itself and its boundaries are constantly shifting.”

The Director of the Dance department Marie Chouinard has commented: “The program will bring to the stage the artists whom I believe today represent the essence of dance as nourishment for the mind and the intellect rather than as a pure aesthetic object. The choreographers we have invited create their works without using a previously codified language: their language develops as the creative process unfurls, generating new relationships with the space in which the dancers move, leading the spectators to discover unfamiliar places and new mental and emotional landscapes.”
