Art of Norman Rockwell

Rome Foundation Museum – Palazzo Sciarra presents the exhibition American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell, opened on 11 November and is open until 8 February 2015 and curated by Stephanie Plunkett (Chief Curator of Norman Rockwell Museum) and Danilo Eccher (Director of GAM in Turin).

The exhibition is sponsored by the Fondazione Roma, organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and the Foundation of Rome -Art-Museums, in collaboration with the New York Foundation and the Special Superintendence for the Historical, Artistic and Ethno-Anthropological Heritage and for the Museum of the City of Rome. A retrospective on the creative journey of Norman Rockwell (1894-1978), American artist who with his talent has illustrated the story of an America that he himself dreamed of.

the show, for the first time in Italy, tracing the production of one of the most acute observers and narrators of the US company, which earned him the nickname “Artist of the people”.

his illustrations, thorough, and mild, directed to the heart rather than the mind, described for more than fifty years (from Ten years to the seventies), dreams, hopes and aspirations, reflecting at the same time, influencing behaviors and thoughts of Americans of the twentieth century.

In his pictures emerge positive characters, reassuring, confident, family, and because such engaging. The observation of reality in Rockwell painting is done and at the same story; the story of a myth, that the US, which goes far beyond the borders of the United States.

The artist mixes the light-heartedness of the origin, contained in the expression of a child who runs away for a prank – eg No swimming in 1921 – the little African American girl who, to use his or her right to education, is escorted to school: the Problem We All Live With, 1964, an emblematic work that reflects the tragedy of apartheid.
