A real paradise surrounded by the sea, the biggest country of Central America derives his name from its geographic position. In the ancient indigenous language, indeed, Nicaragua means “surrounded by water”. Caribbean sea on one side and Pacific ocean on the other, in the middle, the biggest lake of Central America, as big as the Italian region of Umbria: its name could not have been chosen more accurately!
The peculiarity of the country is the abundance of the wilderness, ideal for those who wish to indulge in a holiday away from the usual Caribbean touristic sites.
By now a totally safe and quiet destination, after many years of civil war, the country is gradually opening to international tourism with a hospitality infrastructure that already reached a satisfactory level. All tied together by a strong national identity, fond in the respect of the traditions and roots of the “pueblo”.
Life goes by in a simple and humble fashion in this country. A marvel of uncontaminated nature with about a fifth of its territory under the denomination of protected area, Nicaragua offers national parks, natural and biological reservations, rainforests close to the sea, active volcanoes – like the Masaya, almost 10,000 feet tall – lakes, white sand beaches and crystal clear waters on the Caribbean sea side (with perfect surf waves). Moreover, ancient indios communities, extraordinary small town, traces of the colonial era, maya villages and an excellent and renowned cuisine. An itinerary in the country must start from the arrival hub, the capital Managua, which hosts almost 30% of the 6 million citizens of the country. The city features a characteristic historical city centre and is built on the shore of lake Managua. The Matagalpa mountain are a must to be visited: a natural area of extraordinary beauty and an important center of coffee production. In Estelì, the Central America’s capital of the production of cigars, it is possible to explore the meticulous production procedure of the valuable products. The vast area of Maribios, with its 5 active volcanoes out of 21 displays to tourists the true nature of the country, too many times devastated by earthquakes. The magnificent colonial towns of Leon – land of the Sandinista revolution – founded by the Spanish conquistadores in 1610, and Granada – the oldest European settlement of the entire continent – guide the visitors through the discovery of a unique atmosphere, between old colonial buildings, calm alleys and old churches and convents. The Leon Viejo is a must see: the location of the original Spanish colony in the region, destroyed by an eruption and earthquake during the XVI century. Once on the infinite Pacific Coast, the San Juan del Sur, Las Peñitas, Rivas and Montelimar beaches offer almost 2 miles of untouched ocean shore and a chance to fully experience one of the three seas of the country. The Masaya pueblo, whose first settlement dates back to over 3,000 years ago, is renowned for the production of hammocks for the close by active volcano Santiago, located in the Masaya National Park.
The majestic, humongous lake Nicaragua, shored up by the Ometepe and Solentiname islands, is an absolutely spectacular natural set. Ometepe is a vergin isle with two grandiose volcanoes and calm shores; Solentiname is, instead the painters and artists island, a completely natural and uncontaminated landscape with an exuberant tropical vegetation and thousands of animal species. The Corn Islands, only 20 minutes away from Bluefield and an hour away by plane from the capital Managua, are two islands, Little and Big Corn Island, linked by ferries, an actual tropical paradise with crystal clear waters and beaches with fine white sand. A true escape from civilization, ideal for an essential and frugal stay that can be accessorized with some diving, snorkeling or relaxing on the shore.
